The Zappelloni family emigrated from Borgomanero, in the Province of Novara in the Piedmont region of Italy in the late 1800’s to Hendon , London. They worked in and ran restaurants. Many years and a lot of history on from that, our family today enjoys Italian food and produce with all the rich variety that brings.
On one of our many trips to Italy we visited Apulia ( Puglia), the region in southern Italy famed for its olive oil. Whilst driving from Naples to Lecce , via beautiful towns and scenery and eating as much fabulous Italian food as we could, we visited the beautiful town of Martina Franca. Here we met the Caroli family, running a family business of beautiful olive groves making the finest olive oils and other produce. They kindly invited us to tour their olive groves and see how olive oil was made (and of course tasted!). We knew we loved olive oil but had no real knowledge of the history or processing. There are an estimated 50 to 60 million olive trees in Apulia, and the region accounts for 54% of Italy's olive oil production.
The tour of the Caroli Masseria (estate) was fascinating. The olive oil tasting at the end was a revelation. This oil tasted so much better than the usual brands we bought in the UK. This was fruity, peppery, deliciousness with other varieties being smooth, floral and soft. A revelation. Dipped with bread (or sipped from wine glasses, the best way to taste the’ liquid gold’ ), the depth of flavour was unique.
We asked the Caroli family where we could buy this fabulous oil in the uk and we discovered they exported worldwide but not to the UK - yet! From the olive groves of Apulia, Zappelloni imports was born.
Several months on and we are delighted to have sole distribution of this beautiful Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the UK. To this we are adding other artisanal produce from Apulia that will complement these fine oils, bringing authentic Apulian Produce to the UK market.
